Taking the Challenge

When I was writing on the platform known as "Squidoo", I was offered an opportunity to become a part of the RocketSquid program. Of course it interested me you know rockets and such, but then I learned it had nothing to do with rockets or motors and boy kind of stuff ... bummer.

Seriously, I knew what the program was about briefly, and since I am still in the process of trying to get lenses published every so often, I thought it might be something I needed. The problem is that I had to find time to fit it into my schedule, but I suppose that is not unique to me.

They made it easy on us and the first lesson required that we make a "lens" (write an article) that tells something about ourselves, thus, the About Me - Senditondown bit. Take a brief look into the 10 things you didn't know about Senditondown.

I could tell more ...

but that would take too long, and it could be another lens.

There have been several roads in my life that I would have liked to have avoided.

Like most people, life doesn't always turn out the way you expected. But somehow along the journey you come in contact with people and places that change your life.

Let me share a few of my walks along my life's journey with you.

#1) I am a Christian.

How and when I accepted Christ.

We were good members of church (every Easter) when we would go to church with a friend of my mother's. The remaining part of the year we "rested" on the Sabbath, meaning, we didn't go to church but did what we wanted.

It was on an Easter Sunday when I was 8 years old when I asked Jesus to come into my heart. Mrs. Lidie Cooper,my friend's grandmother, sat in the front row of the church and I had to sit with her. She said, "You want to get saved?" I said "yes", and so I did.

Over the next eight years or so my life would take a big turn and I didn't have much to do with the church, that was until I met a wonderful girl. I rededicated my life to God and got involved in the church. Eventually, I was led by the Lord to be a pastor of a church and now am an Evangelist pastor as well as President of a ministry.

We have moved several times, and it has been over 25 years since we attended Newfield Baptist. We are now non-denominational and continue to preach the Word of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Sunshine Sunflower Seeds - These are the sunflower seeds that I planted for my wife.

Every year I like to plant something for my wife.

It's not that sunflowers are her favorite flowers, but they remind me of her so they have become a part of our yearly garden.

#2) I married my high school sweetheart.

The love of my life.

I could spend an entire day talking about how this woman has changed my life. She's much more than eye candy and a natural beauty. This pretty much sums up the way I felt and feel about my wife.

I saw her.
I met her.
I liked her.
I dated her.

I loved her.
I married her.
I kept her.

Song of Sunshine - I call my wife Sunshine

I call my wife Sunshine and have since high school. I used to sing John Denver's song "Sunshine on My Shoulders" to her when we first met. Somehow I've gotten away from singing it to her ... maybe I should try doing it again.

These are some of the songs that I sang to her that won me her heart. Many others have sang them to her as well, because she does spread SUNSHINE wherever she goes.

You are my sunshine by Gov. Jimmie Davis (he actually wrote the song)

A bit of Sunshine on MP3 - These are the songs that I sang to my wife. The children in church sing You Are My Sunshine to her.

#3) I am a Master Carpenter (so they say).

Never wanted to be one.

My Dad and my uncle were carpenters. In fact as far back as I can trace, all the men in my family have all been carpenters. I tried not to be one, but everything I did landed me back in the wood pile. Even my wife said I couldn't escape it because it was in my blood.

No matter where I have worked in my life, somehow

I end up with a hammer in my hands and doing carpentry work. Rather than fight it I just gave in and 39 years later, I'm still banging those nails.

Can I say I honestly love being a carpenter? Not really, but who can fight against blood?

Carpenter's Tools Articles

3b) Because they asked ...

As a carpenter I am asked a lot of questions about tools. So I wrote a few lenses on them. I still have more in the works.

Cordless Power Tools Builders Use
For years people have been asking me the question, "What tools do you use?" Some think that the tools in my toolbox are too "commercial" ...

#4) I'm an orphan.

Never adopted.

Maybe I'll share more of this in

another article at a later time.

#5) I have traveled a little ...

Plan on doing more.

In the USA: I have been able to visit 33 states (including Hawaii), some more than once.

Other countries: Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Mexico (twice), Bahamas.

Where I'd like to go: Alaska, but my wife doesn't want to (at least not by water). She didn't want to take a cruise either, but she finally did, so there's still hope. Well, maybe not ... we were in the middle of the ocean during a hurricane. Not a good experience for her, oh well.

#6) I have para-sailed in Mexico.

With my lovely wife waving bye to me on the shores of Acapulco Bay, I was wafted off into the water and up into the air. What a great experience to para-sail.

I did take a cruise to Mexico, but it was on my first trip to Acapulco where I para-sailed

Now the next thing is scuba diving.

The Sky's the Limit

While I was in Mexico I had the privilege of being able to para-sail and fly in the skies above the beach of Acapulco Bay. It was amazing...

Have you ever para- sailed or hang glided?

No, I'll Keep My Feet on the Ground Thank You.

Here's what some people said:

Esichrissa – 4 years ago: no, but we’d love to.

Goo2eyes Im – 4 years ago: I am no (yet) crazy to do that. I am afraid of heights.

Flycatcherrr – 5 years ago: No, but I’d love to try – if I could get over my fear of heights!

Microfarmproject – 5 years ago: I would love to try it, however …

Itaya Lightbourne – 5 years ago from Topeka, KS: Doubt it will be something I’ll do as I prefer walking among nature.

#7) I wanted to be a vet.

Since I was a young boy (and only child)and later an orphan, pets have been an escape for me. It was no wonder that I would want to pursue being a vet.

When my parents had moved to Heaven my life focus was on survival, and not school or anything else. My life took another pathway, and my heart's desire would change.

After I met my (future) wife my world became brighter, and she would be the Sunshine of my life. We travel and do everything together, even take Bible classes together and preach. However, pet rescue would become a big part of our lives.

In later years I was thankful I never became a vet, (even though I do all the doctoring at the rescue center) because I could never put a pet down. It wasn't to be and that detour in the road was a good one. Now I get to help save the lives of people and pets.

#8) I have been President twice!

Actually three times if you count now.

It isn't everyone that can say that they've been a president of something. I've been able to hold that title three times.

The first time was when I was a teenager and was voted in as the president of our church youth group at Newfield Baptist (the photo of the church above). I liked that position, because it alloted me time with my girl - which is now my wife. It was her church that I came to attend in my teen years.

The funny thing is that I visited her church once a year and even got saved in it, but never met her until high school. She was active in church and her family traveled and sang; that probably accounts for us never meeting. We first met in high school in the halls outside her home room.

My second time as president was the honor of being the president of our little league. Even though we didn't have any children, my wife and I coached for over a decade. It was during my coaching years that I was the president. Not an easy responsibility, but one I am glad to have had.

Third time: I am currently president of my own ministry. Does self-appointed count?

Hail to the Chief

Would you want to be the president of something? Responsibilities and all?

#9) My hobby - life.

Not so much into hobbies.

I basically do what I like to do, except for when it comes to doing things I can't get out of.

History and wars have always fascinated me. My mother used to tell me my head was full of facts that, well, basically don't matter or amount to a hill of beans. I suppose that's why I love trivia games such as Jeopardy, and am quite good at it.

Since I enjoy trivia type things I wrote a lens which takes in all sorts of things that interest me. I spend more time on quizzes than anything else here, so it only made sense I should give something back to the community. I hope to write many more quiz and poll lenses (hope is the operative word here).

I Love to Cook ... not so much bake!

All under what I call life:

Cooking and my pets are a big part of my life, but I don't consider them to be hobbies. I enjoy cooking for my wife and preparing breakfast in bed for her every weekend. Our pets are our children and we love them dearly.

You can tell by my really quick dessert that it's not where I do my best, but I can do it none-the-less. My Chocolate Covered Pound Cake recipe bears witness to this.

Vegetable gardening is something I do, but it isn't really a passion of mine. That was something my Dad liked to do and he did it well.

Shorts, shorts, shorts. I live in them and do most of my ministry in them (except from behind the pulpit. But if I could, I would). I wear them all year long, even in the snow when I've got my boots on. I like things simple and shorts fit me to a T. That photo of me walking in the first section of this article, was taken in December 2011 outside a shopping center.

Stupid! ... I get bored with "stupid", that includes people (not a good trait for a preacher).

Reading and studying the Bible is exhilarating for me. It is something I love to do, and I can't imagine God not being a part of my life. Without Him I would have been a mess on the streets.

I was a street kid and was always ready to fight; even broke several noses in my lifetime (including my own 6 times). Then I turned my life over to the Lord. I'm still a tough cookie and a little rough around the edges, but God has done a great work in my life and has delivered me from darkness and translated me into the Kingdom of His dear Son (Colossians 1:13).

My ministry isn't one that the majority of people would take on, but I found that most people come with baggage (like me) so that's where I want to serve. It allows me to have the largest congregations, because the "church" doesn't want to have messy people in their flock. Give them to me, I'll take them all.

My Garden Mantis Tiller - This really works.

It works great. It saves me a lot of time and digging. It's compact and allows me to get in tight spaces.

I also like that it can be stored easily, because the handles fold down. This little machine starts like a charm. I wish my chain saw started this easily!

#10) I have never, I might, In the future I ...

No matter what road I may take along my life's journey, I have a good future.

How do I know? God said so. Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
